Jul Afton
We visited a family friend’s house today for lunch. We tried “dopp i gyrtan” which is an old Swedish custom. You take a piece of bread (it looks like a large unleavened cracker) and place it in broth. After a few minutes of soaking you retrieve it and then you add butter, ham and mustard. They told us that not everyone likes it, but we both thought it was delicious. We met some of their extended family including a precocious 14 year old who speaks some of the best english I’ve heard from a non-native speaker. It was really fun to get to experience a Swedish Christmas tradition. With all the talking and visiting we completely missed Kalle Anka, we’ll have to try that next year.
